This little known canal was built to allow ships to offload their cargo from the Great Ogeechee River and transport the cargo by way of boats pulled by mules to Savannah. It is one of the few remaining mule drawn canals in the US and many of the locks still remain. The area is beautiful and a short walk from Hwy 204 down the edges of the canal lead to the river. For history buffs who want to witness something that has disappeared everywhere else in this country this is a must see. The curators are great people and will usually take the time to discuss and explain the canal to you. They are a small group and can use any donations you may want to give to help preserve this quickly disappearing piece of history.
